about

‘EDGE TO BENARES’
This is the second CD from the collaboration of Walt and Matt. It was produced over a period from October 2010 to September 2011. It’s more ambient in general than the first CD, ‘Signal’ (FREE Download from shawlemare.co.uk). There was no initial intention for there to be an Indian flavour to the album, nor is it Indian music in any sense, but as the recording sessions unfolded a growing reference and evocation of the country evolved. Walt and Matt realised that this had emerged from their common Indian experiences travelling there. Matt studied tabla for 6 months in the indescribable city of Benares, that proved to be a source of inspiration for this music. Several of the tracks reflect the noise and the energy of the place. The other inspiration for the album are interfaces of all kinds, hence the preoccupation with ‘the edge’. Walt & Matt co-produced the album using Minimal editing. This involved capturing the raw, live, free improvisation to computer. The data was then edited to allow the best qualty material to emerge & arranged to form complete compositions. A few tweakings and effects were then applied. Some arrangements have multi-track layering, but this was kept to a minimum. We hope you enjoy our music, with its deep emotional richness that challenges the listener with experimental textures, timbre and rhythms. Also our aim is to embody the listener in meditative & engaging, evocative sounds & moods of India’s chaotic streets & diversity of human experience.
